Inside the Student Council
Jocelyn Licwinko’s Journey of Advocacy and Growth
At Berlin International, every student journey is unique, shaped not only by studies but also by the opportunities to engage, lead, and create change within the community. For Jocelyn Licwinko, a second-year Bachelor student in Interior Architecture / Interior Design, joining the Student Council has been one of the most defining parts of her BI experience.
Originally from the United States, Jocelyn already holds a degree in Fine Arts, yet she found something truly distinctive at Berlin International, a smaller, more connected academic environment that encouraged her to become actively involved.
“I knew I wanted to make a meaningful impact here,” she shared. “Being part of the Student Council allows me to advocate for my peers and help create a supportive environment.”
As a Student Representative on the Research Commission, Jocelyn has played an active role in supporting faculty-led research initiatives across different departments, from Architecture and Graphic Design to Business. This experience offered her a deeper understanding of the diverse academic projects taking place at BI and a greater appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration.
One of her proudest moments came when she served as the Student Representative on the Denomination Committee for a new professor in the Interior Architecture Faculty.
“It was an incredible opportunity to contribute meaningfully to our academic community,” she reflected.
Her commitment to improving student life also took a practical form. Alongside fellow council member Vigdis, Jocelyn identified the need for better storage solutions in Interior Design classrooms. Together, they petitioned for additional shelving, and by the following semester, the new storage was installed, making a tangible difference in students’ daily learning environment.
“While it may seem like a small achievement, it was gratifying to identify a need, take action, and see it resolved,” Jocelyn said. “It showed me that with collaboration, change is always possible.”
Beyond projects and committees, the Student Council experience offered Jocelyn something even more valuable — connection.
“It gave me a behind-the-scenes look at how much effort goes into creating a supportive and dynamic environment for students,” she explained. “I’ve gained communication, collaboration, and leadership skills, and a better understanding of how our university truly operates.”
As she wraps up her first year on the Student Council, Jocelyn encourages others to take part:
“So many opportunities are waiting — and we can’t wait to see who steps in next!”
