Below you can read the speech given by our president Dr. hc. mult. Hans-Dieter Klingemann to open the exhibition.
Berlin International has a twofold vision: First, we want to stimulate and develop our students' intellectual curiosity, their creativity and their professional skills. We want them to have a commitment to knowledge that enables them to cope with innovation and contribute to societal problem-solving. This means we want to provide a solid basis for a successful and fulfilled work-life. Second, we want to promote cross-national and cross-cultural understanding. We believe this is indispensable in a globalizing world. Cultural competence is a precondition to navigate today's multi-cultural landscape. What is required is tolerance, mutual understanding and protection of the unalienable individual human rights. A student-centered intercultural educational environment. Be aware that our little campus harbors 66 different nationalities. So far so good. It is relatively easy to enumerate all the goals we want to reach. It is far more difficult to show how these norms square with educational reality. Do we really live up to what we have declared we wanted to achieve? This is the decisive question. And that is why SHOW 2018. In this exhibition, our students - from the first to the sixth semester - show what they have produced with their own hands in Graphic Design & Visual Communication, Product Design, and Interior Design. While there may be exceptions most of the pieces are not just individual creations. It is quite visible that they have grown out and profited from the many interactions between the classmates themselves and their teachers. I can not go into details and do justice to all this exhibition shows today. However, whenever I could spare the time I tried to sneak and look at what you have done in your various seminars. What comes to mind in an unsystematic order are: Alexander Tibus' seminar based on Mark Twain's The Chicago of Europe; Masajo Ave's students competing for the Glassberries awards; Jan Regget's Shifting Shift seminar for the Kindergarten of Ark; Or Hotel Astoria, a real-world project of the 4th semester class of Yüksel, Javier and colleagues. What I saw in the seminar and what I see today fills me with pride. I am proud to say that you and your teachers have really lived up to Berlin International's education philosophy. I am grateful for your effort. Exhibitions of this nature do not fall from the blue sky. They grow out of good governance, sound finance, an enabling infrastructure and dedicated people. Thus, I want to thank the Chancellor and the Faculty of Design for making the funds available for the exhibition. However, dedicated people are the most important precondition. Yesterday I have watched the exhibition going up from the sidelines. It's certainly a joint effort. Despite this, I could not avoid hearing the name 'Anton' being whispered rather often. In addition, Jan Regett and Alexander Tibus deserve special praise, too. When I left campus around eight o'clock last night there was a happy crowd milling around. Once again: thanks to all of you. I am privileged to preside over a vibrant academic community. Enjoy the exhibition.
