There are certain fields of specialization for each type of higher education institution. 

University

Universities in Germany place a strong emphasis on theoretical learning and research. They normally offer a wide range of different subjects, including specialized types such as technical universities or education focused mainly on pedagogy. You may also find universities focused on one subject only such as medicine or sports. 

University of Applied Sciences

On the other hand, universities of applied sciences have a practice-oriented academic approach. Although students learn theory, they also focus more on hands-on experience. There are a variety of fields of study in this type of university, such as technology-related programs, business, marketing, and design, among others. 

College of Art and Music

Colleges of art and music are where artists go to study disciplines like music, architecture, design, and fine arts. Having a particular talent is one of the prerequisites for admission, which candidates must prove in an entrance exam. Additionally, these colleges only take a very small number of students each year.

University of Cooperative Education

Universities of cooperative education are institutions that only offer dual study programs. These programs combine academic studies with vocational training or practical phases in a company. This may be an interesting option for people who prefer to learn practically and jumpstart their careers.
